How best to help suicidal persons over the telephone and Internet

This essay discusses a question which is crucial for the establishment and daily functioning of services involved in suicide prevention over the telephone and on the Internet. What is the best approach for helpers to take in order to reduce de risk of a suicide attempt and help suicidal individuals? After a brief review of the history of methods of helping suicidal individuals over the telephone and over the Internet, we review recent research on the effectiveness of intervention techniques and then conclude with a discussion of challenges for choosing the best way to help suicidal persons using these relatively new technologies.
