Résumé
When exploring the role of mass media in bullying and suicide, it is important to make the distinction between the ways in which the term "mass media" is used. It is often a term used to describe journalistic media, which convey news through television, radio, print, and digital media forms. It can also be used to describe the various modes for delivering messages to wide audiences. Given these dual definitions, this chapter addresses the role of both in the prevention of bullying and suicide. The first section explores the way that the mass media—particularly journalistic media—influence perceptions and behaviors related to bullying and suicide. The second section examines how bullying and suicide prevention programs and campaigns have used various forms of media to reach audiences at different levels of the ecological systems model. The chapter concludes with recommendations for how to maximize mass media's role in the prevention of bullying and suicide.
