Mental health service use by suicidal boys and girls

Résumé
Youth suicide is a significant public health problem globally, necessitating the systematic planning and delivery of resources. In this chapter, we review what is known about when and where suicidal boys and girls receive mental health services and why over time, drawing from community-based studies. We identify noteworthy age-sex/ gender differences which may contribute, in part, to the age-dependent 'gender paradox‘ of higher suicide attempt rates in girls but higher suicide rates in boys. While more up to date information is needed, the receipt of mental health services close in time to a suicide attempt or death seems precarious, particularly in boys. Why this peril occurs requires a much stronger, developmentally sensitive and well-coordinated response.
