Résumé

Existing research suggests that transgender youth may be both more likely to be bullied and also to report suicidal ideation. Although there are reasons to believe there may be direct linkages between bullying and suicidal ideation for transgender youth, this has yet to be empirically tested. It also seems possible that other factors may explain observed associations between gender identity and suicidal ideation, and it is these other influential factors that need to be addressed to buffer transgender youth from further harm. The current study adds to the growing literature documenting the concerning linkages between peer victimization and suicidal ideation. Similar to sexuality minority youth, this relation appears to be particularly strong for gender minority youth. Much of the relation is explained by other, concomitant factors. If we are to affect the rates of mental health challenge, particularly suicidal ideation, more needs to be done to reduce the rates of victimization, particularly heterosexist aggression.
