Bogdan M. Balan is a professor in the Department of Nursing at Université du Québec en Outaouais, Saint-Jérôme campus, where he is responsible for training nurses in advanced mental health practice. After studying psychology and human medicine, he completed a doctorate in social psychology in 2000 at the Alexandra Ioan Cuza University, in Iasi, Romania. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow at CRISE, Université du Québec à Montréal, and became a member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec in 2006. Between 2006 and 2015, he practised as a clinical psychologist, working with youth with mood disorders and self-harming behaviour at Hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies. He is a dialectical behaviour therapy psychotherapist (DBT – Linehan) with intensive training in 2009-2010 and helped implement one of the first DBT programs for adolescents in Québec at the mood disorder clinic Clinique des Troubles de l’Humeur at Hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies. His research interests focus primarily on the prevention of self-harming behaviour and suicide among adolescents through prevention programs and the use of specific interventions, using evidence-based models.
